To promote the popularization of electric vehicles and achieve carbon neutrality, it is crucial to develop efficient and environmentally friendly power battery technologies, with solid-state batteries becoming a key development direction. From 2015 to 2023, China has introduced a number of policies, explicitly supporting the development of solid-state battery technology and setting development targets such as energy density.

Advantages and technical routes of solid-state batteries: Compared with liquid lithium batteries, solid-state batteries have obvious advantages in terms of safety, energy density, cycle life and low-temperature performance. Its main technical routes include oxide solid-state batteries and polymer solid-state batteries, and there are differences between the two in performance such as electrochemical Windows and interfacial resistance.

Current market and enterprise layout status: The solid-state battery industry chain is similar to that of liquid lithium batteries, with the upstream covering raw materials, minerals, etc. Globally, Japan and South Korea started early and mostly conducted research and development through alliances. Large European and American automakers have entered the market through investment. Many Chinese enterprises are also actively laying out industrialization projects, and the industrial competitiveness in places like Shenzhen and Shanghai is relatively strong. From the perspective of financing, the number of enterprises raising funds rose from 2019 to 2023, but most of them were still in the early stage.

Application trends and market penetration rate: The downstream applications of solid-state batteries are mainly concentrated in fields such as new energy vehicles, energy storage, and consumer electronics. It is estimated that by 2030, the penetration rates of solid-state batteries in the consumer electronics, power battery and energy storage sectors will reach 12%, 10% and 1.5% respectively. In terms of cost, the total unit cost of semi-solid cells in the medium term is approximately 0.50 yuan per watt-hour, and that of all-solid cells is about 0.78 yuan per watt-hour.

Challenges and coping strategies faced: Solid-state batteries are confronted with issues such as low ionic conductivity, unstable solid-state interfaces, and the lack of standard equipment and testing methods. The coping strategies include strengthening technological research and development, innovating materials and production processes; Optimize the supporting industries such as the power management system and establish a standard system; Deepen opening up and cooperation with the outside world and enhance market awareness.

Enterprise capacity planning and product layout: Multiple enterprises are conducting capacity planning and product layout for solid-state batteries. For instance, Qingtao has developed high-energy-density solid-state batteries, which are applied in multiple fields. Ganfeng Lithium Battery is actively planning its production capacity, with its products covering lithium batteries and solid-state batteries, etc.

The solid-state battery industry has broad prospects but coexists with challenges. Through policy promotion, technological innovation, industrial chain collaboration and standard construction, it is expected to break through the bottleneck, achieve large-scale commercial application and promote the development of the new energy industry.
